Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum" The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving a city. ...
It was a good day for driving. It was quiet on the road so we made good time and drove further then we expected to. We left Utrecht at 1 pm and we arrived in Hengersberg at 7.30 pm. We initially wanted a hotel in Metten, but all the hotels in that small town were full. The hotel we ended up in was very nice, clean and spacious.
After we were settled we ...
A late start, impending storm and repetitive scenery - fields, farms and hamlets - had us focused on just one thing - speed. We didn't fancy getting wet and wanted to explore our next overnight town of Deggendorf. On the flat, our Pino can (once inertia is overcome) gain fearsome momentum. Maintaining 25km was our goal. Average speed over a day drops each time you slow to explore a village, take photos or walk the bike through a pedestrian area. Focused on ...
... Ah long story short we seriously thought we were going to be stuck in a foyer all night but eventually woke the only one person in the whole hotel and we managed to get to our room..... Anxious moments. The ride is was a combination of following the river and some through forests. A very steep forest ride up nearly killed me. Close the to Chez ...
... but so full of history. We did a guided tour of the town and then had free time to explore the centre and market square also the local church. We had lunch in the square and then explored a bit. All too soon the time came to set off and we drove towards Passau, when we arrived we had time to explore the town. Once again a stunning church, each one we see seems to surpass the last one. Back on board and we sailed out of this pretty place and then down to dinner, superb as ...

This is the second time we've stayed in Bayerische Eisenstein, the first at Sporthotel Brennes. Wow! Chalk and cheese. Sporthotel was very basic, and we were the only guests off season so the hotel was undergoing a deep clean so no sauna, pool, solarium or restaurant. Pension Élan is much closer to town and is more comfortable. The hosts are incredibly welcoming and speak good English, our room is comfortable and the two saunas working and nice. Drinks availavable, parking, tv, robe - generally fab. Would definitely stay again
