This is the second time we've stayed in Bayerische Eisenstein, the first at Sporthotel Brennes. Wow! Chalk and cheese. Sporthotel was very basic, and we were the only guests off season so the hotel was undergoing a deep clean so no sauna, pool, solarium or restaurant. Pension Élan is much closer to town and is more comfortable. The hosts are incredibly welcoming and speak good English, our room is comfortable and the two saunas working and nice. Drinks availavable, parking, tv, robe - generally fab. Would definitely stay again

We must have a thing about going to places undergoing construction, because much of the old town was undergoing some pretty major refurbishment work so there were tractors and diggers and scaffolding blocking some streets. Unfortunately we also missed going up the church tower as there was an event on and it was closed, ...
41 kms AM - Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum". PM - The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving ...
... the hotelrestaurant to have some dinner. It was simple but nicely prepared. We had a a tomato creme soup and a Wiener Schnitzel for me, trout and veal for Erwin.
Back in our room we watched Germany struggle with Ghana and went to bed. Tomorrow is going to be another long day of driving and we should be able to make it to the campground in the afternoon.
