... the next train, which was to Nagano, we missed it and had to wait for the next one. That was 20 minutes late leaving so what had been at the outset a very tight schedule for the day so that we could see the snow monkeys became almost impossible. We were over an hour late arriving in Nagano and then had to catch a public bus for a 40 minute ride before walking almost two miles to the hot springs (onsen) where the monkeys bathe. ... needed any more evidence that the Japanese love to superheat their transport, the bus driver had a little analogue thermometer above his head, which was reading 27 or 28 degrees celcius. It was too damn hot, and on the seat I was in, the window was fixed and wouldn't open. At least those in the rows behind me had the luxury of opening a window and not suffocating.

Day 13 - Impromptu Karuizawa and Matsumoto Castle

... steep to give the upper hand to the castle defenders if attackers made it into the castle grounds and attempted to scale the stairs.

The views over the city of Matsumoto at sundown, which is circled on all sides by snow covered mountains, was pretty special. Within the castle itself, virtually no area is off-limits, so we were able to explore the whole castle by ourselves before cautiously returning to the ground floor.

Day 12 - Nagano. Now we're cold.

Heading from Tokyo to Nagano, the scenery gradually got hillier and hillier, and appeared to get much colder outside. Before too long the cityscapes of Tokyo and Nagoya changed into vistas of snow covered villages in rural towns who's names I can't remember, or in some cases even pronounce.
