... as they moved around, getting the chance to be very close to them. I really enjoyed watching the baby monkeys as they were really cute. They tend to stay close to their mums and liked to hitch rides around on their backs or fronts. We couldn't believe how human like they were, they have proper hands and fingers just like us. They loved to go for a swim in their little onsen and we even watched one holding his breath and staying under water for ages. We ...

... turn to hairpin turn as I was able to keep a line of cars behind me by braking hard into the turns and then easing up and letting gravity rocket me down to the next turn. I've never cycled on roads with so many hairpin turns. I'm not sure why there are so many in Japan but I guess it makes for less steeper roads.

You're not even allowed to bring a towel into the onsen water to cover yourself up. After today's ride ...

As we were to observe, the monkeys spend most of their time being aggressive and sorting out the pecking order. Fights are numerous and frequent and a bit loud and scary too. When we got to the monkey onsen there were five or six bathing. We watched them for ages, fighting, playing, screaming, paddling, swimming, lounging about. After a while it was time to leave so we walked to ...

The day I met Hokusai in an Onsen

A travel blog entry by leopold2507

... they are all impressed when I say I'm from Germany and show their appreciation with a long guttural "Ooooouuuuuhhh". I also quickly discover what wonderful things are produced here using the local chestnut after treating myself to a purely medicinal eissu krimu. Strengthened, I enter the very old fashioned but nonetheless very nice Hokusai museum with lots of prints from "a 100 views of Mount Fuji", paintings, wooden panels... And I learn that he became famous producing ...
