... lush a bit like Byron hinterland. Then the surf beaches and rock formations reminded me a little of point perry near Coolum. Nice! Of course this place has a style all its own we're in Japan! :) Very excited to be here. Destination: Shimoda and our home for 3 nights at Shirahama beach. It's a little surfie town that looks straight out of the seventies. Our plan is to relax after the big city. We're all glad to be here. Only drawback is the rain. We're hoping for some fine ...

We stop somewhere at a local onsen to get some cool drinks from a vending machine. At the entrance of the onsen facility is a cute Jizou statue. We continue our trip west and soon reach the west coast of the Izu Peninsula which is much less developed than the east coast. The scenic coastline has steep hills and many inlets. We pass Matsuzaki, an old small port ...

... harbor. But what happened here with the Russians in 1855? Commodore Matthew Perry sailed to Japan twice. In 1853 he presented Japanese delegates with a letter from U.S. President Fillmore. He hoped to open up trade with Japan. After presenting the letter Perry left for the coast of China, promising to return for a reply. Commodore Perry returned to Japan in 1854 to find out that the Japanese had prepared a treaty accepting almost ...
