... life is altogether slower. The old centre is preserved and the only vehicle to get around in is the water buffalo so we hitch a tour before heading to star sand beach where we look across at the moody skies in Ishigaki and the emerald green sea. The view is stunning even with the overcast conditions. After catching a return boat we enjoy a lovely meal in Ishigaki town and chat to a delightful Japanese girl who ...

... bougainvillaea, sugar cane etc. all you would expect from a sub tropical island plus a lot if rice paddies. We spent the day exploring the island. First off was Yaima Village, nestled in the hillside it was a tourist village designed to show off various aspects of Ishigaki life in the early 1900s. A fisherman's cottage, the Chief's ...

... in Japan it is nearly unknown. Because of a typhoon, we couldn't go for a snorkel tour, but when you will visit this area, try to do it. Cost for a tour is from 5.000 - 12.000 ¥. Ishigaki is know as a Manta spot. There is a very good chance to see them, even without scuba diving. Wise to spend that money. Hotel: we can recommend the Hotel Patina Ishigakijima. It's close to the center, port and bus station (5-10min walk). You can get towels ...

... 10 for a towel, and $10 for a tube!! $6 for a shaved ice. It's so ridiculously expensive. It's been quite a shock, even for a repeated visitor. Despite the beauty of this island, Okinawa is definitely far from a backpacking potential. And what's more disturbing is that I recently lost $50 :'( A few days ago, I was at an airport trying to check into a domestic flight to Ishigaki island. I had about 45 minutes before the flight departure. When I walked up to ...

Taketomi Island

... there are a lot of traditional Yaeyama-style houses left in the village.

We arrived at Taketomi Island in the late afternoon of the third day of the trip. A guest house staff picked us up at the ferry port, so my mum didn't walk much for the day. Immediately after we arrived at the guest house, I went out, because I predicted it would rain on the next day. I visited Taketomi Primary and Junior High School, Nagomi Tower and Nishi Sanbashi Pier. I enjoyed strolling in the ...
