Asklepion caddesi 2 Bergama, Izmir, Turkey, 0232/633-2153
I left Istanbul Monday mornıng (I'm writing this on the 1st May) by ferry accross the Marmer Sea after sleepıng in a basement hallway nd getting up to catch a 9am ferry that didn't exist and waiting until 12.30 at the terminal. After buses galore I make ıt to Bergama that night and went to the Acropolis the next day which was wicked! My first Monument break in! I'll put some pictures up wıth the full story.
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey sambarker... we found the fence ok, the scramble up the mountain took through thorny hip-height scrub and we were making it up as we went along. We finally reached the top and climbed over what we thought were walls but were in fact part of the ruins.
The Acropolis was home to a lot of impressive features - a 10,000 seat amphitheater, the steepest theater known from ancient times, the ...

Ayvalik, Balikesir, Turkey traceybelleWhy are we leaving gorgeous Ayvalik, our stunning guesthouse and lovely friends to go and see ruins I wonder as Tania harries me off to the bus stop.
Two hours later and having checked into a hotel where the owner admits "I am Gobi" (yep really) we trek uphill solidly for the next hour and it's 35 degrees plus. Perhaps this should be called schlepping to Asclepion.
However, the place was genuinely stunning and it ...
... 2 nights, Ilana prepared a picnic for us on our adventures. Bergama has a wonderful Akropol overlooking town. We were fortunate with a wonderful guide with enthusiasm to include the children and their imaginations. The Akropol was a major site with 5 temples(Apollo, Zeus, Athena-Hadrian (he seems to pop up everywhere),Artemis, and Dionysis) which were amazingly well preserved. We wandered the site for hours and then ate our lunch under the shade of large pine trees and ...
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey krupnicksgo... the ruins, exploring the agora, the middle city, and the tile mosaics. Unbelievably, as these were easily the best areas of the Akropolis, the tour groups never even go down there, I guess due to the steep hill they reside on...this is why I loathe taking tours as you usually don't get get the necessary time required to properly explore the area and you often miss the 'hidden' gems of a ...
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey trentThis is my third visit to Bergama, Turkey, location for the fabulous acropolis of ancient Pergamon. Each visit has been a gift of memorable occurrences.
My first visit was in the Spring of 1970, in the middle of a four-year hitch-hiking trip around the world. On a night I slept on the heights of the acropolis. I woke in the pre-dawn and looked to the east. There, standing above the horizon was ...
... we got round it we were in need of drinks. We got back to the wee bazaar at the real entrance to shouts of "Fresh Orange Juice", "Ice Cream, You Scream, We all Scream for Ice Cream", "Cheaper than Chips - Cheaper than Wal Mart". Clearly the traders knew their market. We had fresh orange juice and Gina, suffering mildly from information and culture overload, courageously bought a rather exotic hand bag for about £12.00. We walked back the 3km to the Pensyon ...
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey chickensafloat... for sea foam, an apt description of the white, light-as-a-feather carvings. We drive towards Pergamos [Revelation 2:1-7], which is high on a hill to the northeast. As we get closer we pass women picking tobacco in one of the few fields that had not yet been harvested. We get to the base of the hill and can see the ruins of the ancient city on the hilltop. But to get to the city we must drive up and around the steep hill before we reach our destination. I ...
