Day Trip to post town

... plan was to enjoy Tsumago and then walk 2-3 hours to Magome, but around lunchtime it started pouring down rain with no sign of letting up, so we only got to visit Tsumago. The main street had a variety of inns, shrines, houses, and of course souvenir shops. Next time we come to Japan, we will do the walk with our bells on (bc of bears!)

Magome and Tsumago: Tourism on the Edo Highway

... Kyoto. Other assure me that it's because of sakura, but I'm not certain that there'd be any fewer gaijin even a few weeks down the road. I'll call Kyoto a must see becuase you just have to, but I would totally draw the line at waxing poetic about grasping Japan's history through Kyoto--in some ways, a museum could achieve the same task. It's about pictures, monumental scales and saying you've done it in Kyoto. Next up: Kanazawa, the Kyoto of the northern coast. -mike

We've found a kind of paradise

... most pictueresque landscape you can imagine. Even the natural resources here are so neat and tidy! In any case, I am truly blessed to have seen these things with my own eyes. In closing, my lesson for today was undoubtedly about appreciation for nature. I am and have always been a person who loves animals, parks, and nature in general. I used to be able to sit and listen to the trees blow in the wind for hours Somehow, along the way I'd replaced ...

Hakuba: heart of the Japanese Alps

... Scott also made sure we had satisfied stomachs, taking us all to a couple of out-of-the-way restaurants that gave you an incredible amount of ramen, katsu-don and other Japanese delights for your yen (a VERY welcome change with the dive in the dollar). The boys had hoped to do some backcountry with Scott, to explore these incredible mountains even more (and also as skiing out of bounds is strictly forbidden at Hakuba - ski patrol will come ...

Snowboarding and onsens in Nozawa Onsen

... which almost always included delicious Nagano apples which are seriously nearly the size of your head!) and pretty much just hung out with anyone who was staying at the lodge. They even put on an Aussie BBQ for Australia Day celebrations. Yes, we had sausage sizzle and Crown Lagers in Japan. It was the perfect place to stay and we loved our Japanese style room with a view of the mountain and the ski jump from the 1998 Nagano Winter ...

Kiso Valley, Old Nakasendo Way, Cycling trip

Magome & Tsumago Post Towns

... where there was nothing special to see but a beautiful view of Tsumago Town from up there. Near the train station was the house of one thousand statues of the Kannon Goddess. That was not so interesting, but I picked a peach on the premise and it was pretty good. When I got to the station, I had half an hour left to catch a train to Nagoya. So I also visited Momosuke bridge (mentioned above). I didn't know who he was, but the bridge was enogh to tell me how rich he was. All in all ...
