this weekend a guy in my class invited all the 3rd years up to his parents house in northern ireland for his birthday. i got a lift up with a few friends from uni and we met the other 7 cars at a mcdonalds just over the border before heading off the highway to try to find his house. we got lost, a few times, i think we all did 4 or 5 u-turns and the leading car kept pulling over to let someone slightly less lost go in front! but we eventually made it ...

A quick trip along the coast before returning to the hotel.
A nice little coastline.
I did get caught in a police roadblock. Luckily, I have a UK license. Made it a breeze to get through without many questions. Curious to find out what they were looking for.

One of the Irish Round Towers is here as well. These were used as lookouts as well as refuges. The door is usually 12-20 ft up and was accessed by ladder. The first floor inside also had a ladder access on the inside. After going in, the ladders were pulled up.
We flew out of San Antonio,to Houston, Newark and on to Dublin, all on Continental Airlines. No great trauma.
Our original itinerary had us traveling north from Dublin to visit Tyrone Crystal, Carrickfergus Castle, the Glens of Antrim, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle, but on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Co. Donegal and does business on both sides of the border ...
... the legacy of the "orange" and the "green". The Boyne was in flood from all the rain in Ireland, and we heard that Belfast and Northern Ireland had been flooded since we left - maybe we did alright after all with the weather!!! Everybody has said that this has been their worst summer for years. Well, into Dublin and at last tonight at Foleys we enjoyed the Craic, the infectious rhythms of traditional Irish music and enjoyed mussels for dinner.
Baillieborough, United Kingdom barbo... Damien said they saved for "friends" so he would put us up in one of the staff rooms for a much cheaper price. "Mona" was out of town, and he said that if we didn't mind her odd things kicking around we were most welcome to stay there. We were so pleased! The last thing we wanted to do was move again. He asked if we'd like to see the room as it was not like the regular accommodations, but we both agreed as long as there were ...
Belfast, United Kingdom wakingdreamLeaving Scotland and heading over to Northern Ireland, on the ferry ride that scoots you across the North Channel, I met a fellow backpacker...this guy was perfectly fit and quite able to work and he was on his way to a MDS Lab to volunteer his body to 4 weeks of lab research and drug testing. In return for the submission of his mind and body, he will be paid 2000 quid. Not bad money, not bad at all, but, really is it worth it? Is this what backpacking is all about? I know it ...
Belfast, United Kingdom lalalaura... said on the call. She spoke to someone in their head office in Malaysia and said we had a family emergency and needed to get home ASAP. We were then booked the whole way through to Belfast.. for no cost. Although we had over 24hrs of travelling ahead, we were glad to get the flights and looking forward to coming back to see everyone (more so because they didn't know we were coming!). As it happened, my Mum ...
Belfast, United Kingdom paulandciara... to pigeonhole these issues into cookie cutter replicas. Their are vast differences in the sizes of the problems, the histories of the problems and the causes of the problems. Perhaps what I found more curious is how each country has reacted to the problems. The major difference to me seems to be that here in Northern Ireland, the problem is very much in people's faces. In fact, it is very much in the faces of the entire International community. Marches and bonfires ...
