... on triangular blocks whilst having huge stone tablets placed on their thighs. Nice. Dinner was the local speciality of Hida beef which is highly marbled and cooked at your table. Mine was served with shiitake mushrooms, miso soup, rice and vegetables I didn't recognise. Nice enough but I won't be hunting it out at home. All in all a great start to the Japanese adventure. I travelled to Matsumoto with an old friend from university. On the first day of the trip, we visited Matsumoto Castle and walked around the streets of Matsumoto, tasting some local foods including basashi, sanzokuyaki and sansei, local sake. On the next day, we drove along Venus Line, stopping at Utsukushigahara Highland and Mt Kirigamine.

Today was a day with lots of walking, a good contrast to the previous day of too much sitting on a bus. We started in a slightly leisurely way, meeting at 9 a.m. which gives us lots of morning time to catch up on things like writing blog entries! Our first walk took us across the river to a simple street market. Vendors sold flowers, vegetables, local products and tourist trinkets. It wasn't a substantial market, but a glimpse of local entrepreneurs. We were then taken to ...

... was the first time since arriving in Japan where I've thought it was silly busy, albeit with mostly foreign tourists) I headed out of main throngs for a wander and some quiet, I returned to the streets later and it was a bit better, I booked into a small guesthouse and headed for dinner that evening to a local Hida beef restaurant with three others from the guesthouse, another Japanese meal/ cooking lesson as there was a seemingly endless stream of dishes bought to ...
