It is somewhat like large markets in most cities, but bigger and with 100 times more species of fish and untold items which we could never name and mostly couldn't guess how to use ... dried herbs or seaweeds, for example. To my relief, most of the fish and shellfish were not alive, but I did see an iced crab try for one final limb stretch. A small fish was served, intact, and a bit messy to manage with chop sticks but we all managed one way or another. Various Japanese condiments and the required rice bowl, of course. We were all exhausted when we arrived at about 7:30, but in awe of the bus driver's skills maneuvering the narrow mountain roads with only a couple of inches between oncoming buses and trucks in many places. Takayama ...

... area as you had to walk about two miles from the bus stop then into the forest to see this incredible sight, the Japanese macaque monkeys bath in the hot onsen water, and although the park area wardens supply food to entice them to the area and the existing pool is man made it isn't an enclosure and the monkeys roam freely, the pool was built after the monkeys were found one day in a local onsen hotel bath during the winter! Macaque monkeys aren't usually found this ...
