... The ryokan that we're staying at has pickup from the station, which is fantastic as it's a good 30min walk from the city - not fun with three large bags and kids that are at each other..we may not have got there in one piece if we walked..

... The rain cleared in the afternoon so walked the town, the temple area ( I will never learn) and up the hill overlooking the town (Shiroyama Park). The view from the top was disappointing though as you couldn't see anything for the trees. And the castle ruins at the top were, well................nothing. After a warm ryokan farewell we visited the fabulous Matsumoto Castle amid glorious cherry blossoms. A three hour train journey through Alps to reach Takayama, then a ten minute walk to our old fashioned minshuku. Spent the next three days walking round thislittle town with its quaint old buildings and several bridges over the river. Checked out the morning market and all the lovely craft shops. Quite  cold, even got snowed on. Had three great dinners while in atakayama. First night was some delicious Hida beef we cooked at table top BBQ. ...
