The 2:30 hrs train ride from Nagoya to Takayama was very scenic. I really got a bit homesick on this train ride. Takayama is a small town close to the Japanes mountains also called Japanese Alps. The town has a beautiful old town and many lovely temples (with awesome picture opportunities). I did two day trips, one on top of a mountain with a cable car and another one ...

It's surprising where the gold leaf shows up .. we were given candies with a few embedded flakes, and I even saw ice cream with gold leaf decoration. I wanted to have some, but there wasn't time to find the shop. I believe it's considered to have medicinal qualities when consumed. We then took a walk to a nearby street which is the Geisha centre, though I think it's primarily restaurants and tourist activities these days. ...

... by the hospitality he had received whilst in Japan so was considering maybe not going home just yet and volunteering around Japan for another couple of months, another one bitten by the Japan bug! I spent a couple of days doing the tourist thing around Nagano including Zenkoji temple which was more busy than usual as the temple was displaying the first Buddhist statue to be brought into Japan which only happens every 6 years, I also stumbled on a memorial service ...
