Sundays are full on family days in Japan, and we are lucky to have a chance for a full extended family outing to Harajuku - youth culture shopping mecca. Tim bows out as he preps for a teaching exam, but May, Amy and Haruko join the three of us and Takakosan for an 8-member party excursion to the busiest of busy shopping streets -- Takeshita Dorii. ... Japanese, has married with young daughter. So it seems it is possible to crack the language code! We are staying in a modern cabin and there is so much snow here that the roads are like tunnels. Our first day was a shorter one-to test out equipment and the body. We set off from Norikura, a small resort, taking the lift up to its top then skinning up to a steep area in the Wakaguri trees. Deep snow knee high, steep slopes, and first day on ski touring gear made it ...

... to Tokyo is Mt Takao (Takao-san), which is a 90 minute train ride from my place. After every train station more and more hikers entered the train, all in full alpine outfit. The Japanese don't know the term 'slightly': if they go out to climb a mountain they seem to prepare for a week on Everest.

Takao-san itself was OK for sightseeing, but no real hiking experience. The road was ...
