... rests and I take in the Grandberry outlet scene -- a now fabulous Sunday destination for Japanese families has put Minami Machida on the map (and express route!).

An Ukai Tei teppanyaki feast is next. We are treated to an amazing meal that exhausted and jetlagged Lily mostly sleeps through (miso soup and rice notwithstanding). The grounds of Ukai Tei offer jaw-droppingly impressive scenes both inside and out and are a truly memorable last evening in Japan.

... Hayao Miyazaki thought up the story in the first place. Cool place! We wandered around for a while, saw some beautiful scenerys and then wandered off a bit in the city. We checked out of the hostel around 8 am, keen to see the much talked about fish market in the Ginza region. I've not talked much about the hostel, but we both think it was particularly excellent. Having decided to take our bags with us to the fish market, it meant the journey took a bit longer than we ...

We are staying in a modern cabin and there is so much snow here that the roads are like tunnels. Our first day was a shorter one-to test out equipment and the body. We set off from Norikura, a small resort, taking the lift up to its top then skinning up to a steep area in the Wakaguri trees. Deep snow knee high, steep slopes, and first day on ski touring gear made it ...

... to Tokyo is Mt Takao (Takao-san), which is a 90 minute train ride from my place. After every train station more and more hikers entered the train, all in full alpine outfit. The Japanese don't know the term 'slightly': if they go out to climb a mountain they seem to prepare for a week on Everest.

Takao-san itself was OK for sightseeing, but no real hiking experience. The road was ...
