Never as good as the first time

... and their train life, but is still strange to witness it yourself. As soon as the train sets itself in motion, the people change from quiet and non-expressive to shouting and laughing. Bento-boxes (lunch packages) are opened and snacks are shared between strangers. It's some sort of a "we're all in it together"-like atmosphere. I had a talk with an elder person sitting next to me, who turned out to be a keen hiker as well. Odd how ...

Leaving Takayama we travelled via Nagoya to Tokyo and the train line ran about 30 miles south of Mount Fuji. On the way, we were fortunate enough to get a wonderful view of a superb looking mountain, but the view only lasted about 2 mins due to the excessive speed of the Shinkasen train. However, that little snapshot was more than enough to convince us to go back for a full day out.

This was a little bit of a boo boo. I didn't realise when I booked a night near Mt Fuji that it would be such a poo to get to. When looking up the timetables were saying between 5-10 hours to get there. We decided to go straight into Tokyo then back out again and it seemed a pretty simple straight line. It was it just took ages. We had a circle line to Osaka then another line to the Shinkansen station at Shinosaka. Then easy going on the Shinkansen into Tokyo. ...

Not my best day today. I decided on a bit of a whim yesterday that I was going to take a trip to Mt Fuji. I booked a hotel online at the last minute just before I fell asleep, didn't book any train tickets, didn't look at the weather forecast, and then got up this morning and started the trek to Kawaguchiko, one of the towns in the foothills of the mountain with reputedly excellent mountain views over a lake. Can you foresee any problems that may have ...

... to Tokyo is Mt Takao (Takao-san), which is a 90 minute train ride from my place. After every train station more and more hikers entered the train, all in full alpine outfit. The Japanese don't know the term 'slightly': if they go out to climb a mountain they seem to prepare for a week on Everest.

Takao-san itself was OK for sightseeing, but no real hiking experience. The road was ...
