... colorful sky-high portable shrines carried during the Hita Gion Festival and Kangien (a progressive educational institution that produced some of the famous personalities in Japanese history and was run by the ancestors of the current Oita governor).
The hotel itself looks out on to Mikuma River and offers a variety of plans for rest, relaxation, meals, and best of all the yakata-bune which is a traditional river boat with tatami mats and ...

The Biggest Volcano Calder in the World

... one active volcano in the area - with the idea that we'll walk around its crater before heading back down. Unfortunately - due to volcanic activity - the crater is not the safest place to be that day so we just decide to walk down from the top - about a 3 hour jaunt. Again the views are great and despite the snow storm the previous night, the day is warm and clear. We decided to try and take a short cut through the woods, lost our bearings ...

... practice. The Onsen is split into Male and Female baths - no swimming cossies, you go in the buff. The idea is that the baths are for soaking not for cleaning; you scrub yourself before rinsing off and getting in. As this is a small town with not many visitors this time of year, I was the only gaijin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaijin in the place so naturally I was stared at the whole time, probably exacerbated by my ...

Hello Kumamoto

... February, was in full blossom. The smell was amazing, the tree blossom bright pink and white. It only took a couple of hours to walk around the grounds including the park, so I then headed into the city. Back into the shopping arcades, I wandered aimlessly. I don't really want to get stuck into the shops; already I've found so many things I want to buy but, even the exchange rate is a smidge better than it was, most things are still really expensive. For ...

Ode to Nihon, Past and Future

... war in the 1940s, the Allies' decision to use a new technology was made without a crystal ball into the future. Einstein & Szilard wrote to Roosevelt urging Manhattan project for fear of Germany developing it first. I think the key question for us now, living in our now, is how do we proceed? These museums do an only ok job of mentioning Japanese aggression in the 30s & 40s. To its credit, Hiroshima museum mentions Nanking massacre and invasions of ...
