Today I decided to stay in takayama for the rest of the morning and head to Kyoto around lunchtime. I headed to the hida folk museum, which displays traditional Japanese houses from the 1600's onwards, in order to preserve this cultural heritage for future generations. The temples had some brilliant gardens surrounding them(see pictures), which really made use of the autumnal colours and must be off the tourist radar because they were well worth visiting and yet I only saw 2 or 3 people in the whole 12 temple complex. ... museum(free entry with castle ticket) which had some decent samurai armour, swords and guns. I then had a wander around Matsumoto which like Nagano moves at a much slower pace than Tokyo and for that reason has a much more relaxed feel.

I then headed back to my hostel in Nagano and had a rest ahead of visiting mt fuji tomorrow and the 4 hour train journey.

P.S sorry for all the castle pictures. I told you I liked ...

... Castle too early (opened at 8.30). Museum first and then the castle. Shame about the heavy rain! Climbed to the top of the castle-steps extremely steep. Good views of surrounding area. Photo with young man dressed as a ninja with a sword -missed the one in warrior costume. Further along the road, promoting a walking quiz thing-cute character photo opportunity. Steve ...
