... now it was dark so we wrapped up very warmly and joined the rest of the people in the town in viewing the castle & blossoms by floodlight. Being Saturday evening it was extremely busy but everyone is very polite and considerate so there is no pushing and shoving which makes it very pleasant. Musicians played traditional music from the moon viewing balcony in the castle. Being still full with sweet fish we opted for a cheese plate snack for dinner in the library cafe opposite the ...

Also on display, was a 'shishigashir" (lion's mask). Apparently the Japanese of the time had never seen a real lion, although they considered it the king of the beasts. The lion mask was considered to have magical powers and they adopted a lion dance to exorcise evil and to pray for a good harvest. I also took a picture of the lion costumes worn by men during the festivals.

... we are presented with an array of breakfast delights - cold salmon with a sweet sauce and vegetables, various pickles and tofu, sizzling Hida beef, miso soup, rice, a plate of omelette smothered in tomato ketchup with salad and a banana?? This was topped off with Japanese tea and then coffee. The presentation and service was excellent, and if I had been given this at 7.30pm rather than 7.30am I am sure I would have been able to eat the lot. David ...
