... rooms were available. We went to a good hotel about 20 minutes walk from the station and were shown to our rooms after a bit of a wait. Luxury- we could take showers although we had no clean clothes to change into as we had only our day sacs with us. ... last tickets are issued at 4:00. Our tour leader had phoned ahead to the ticket office and managed to persuade them to stay open, so we got in. By the time we got there the hot spring where the monkeys bathe was being brushed clean and the monkeys had left it so we didn't see any monkeys in the water. That was disappointing. ... fact, for Charlotte and I to venture up the road to the nearest service station for vending machine hot chocolates.

By the time we got back to Nagano station, at 4pm in the afternoon we realised that we still hadn't had lunch, so we grabbed quick and easy bento lunchboxes and returned to the hotel to eat them, and banished the thought of trying to fit anything else into today.

... a lot of cashed-up suburbanites apparently have holiday homes. As a result, a great deal of upscale shopping and outlet stores have popped up, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, in what would appear to be a very successful endeavor to separate these suburbanites, and more than a handful of day-tripping tourists, from some of their cash.

... later when they asked me to hand the key back. After about a minute of making gestures of closing a door and showing them my empty hands, and pointing in the direction of our room, I think they either understood that I'd either locked the key in the room, or lost my mind. Either way they seemed to accept that as a valid reason why I wasn't handing the key back, and I was allowed to leave.
