This morning we left our ryokan, the Kagaya Hotel, and started on our trip to Shirakawa-go. We first visited a rice farmer. He only farms 0.7 acres. We learned all about rice farming and the problems it is now having in Japan. ... At last we had time this evening for showers before dinner. Another buffet dinner, where once again I ate too much. There is no wifi in the room, a few of us are sitting in the lobby tapping away. Every time the door opens there is a blast of freezing cold air, which reminds us that outside the temperature is zero! It should reach 10° tomorrow. I'm glad I brought my vest!
Early shinkansen to Nagano. Quite warm. Renovating so wander around construction site to local train to Yudanaka.
Local train "Snow Monkey Express" climbed up steady slope to many snow banked buildings, eventually snow-covered fields.
Yudanaka is grey and unimpressive at the station. We decide to take a taxi to hotel.
Arrive at hotel at about 1:30 so chose to walk up to Snow Monkeys. We were told we could check in before 4, or after 4:30.
