Today was a bit of a spare day, due to Nara being a shorter trip than planned, so I decided to head to Okayama which is on the route towards my next hostels destination of Hiroshima. Similarly to Himeji, Okayama has a castle and a famous garden(one of the top 3 in all of Japan) so I spent the late morning and early afternoon pottering around these sights. These two were hidden gems that are mainly missed off tourist itineraries. The castle, known ...

For a change, this was a bit a different kind of hostel. It's very Japanese style, you sleep on tatami, breakfast is miso soup and rice. Guests are here from Holland, England, Australia and Japan.

I decided actually to stay here an extra day, it's great to be with a bunch of people, where you feel so welcome!

... br> So far, we haven't bought much at all, just a few wooden spoons and a Shinkansen (the new N700 model of Shinkansen) shaped bottle of sake which we asked David and Leith to drink for us. Apparently, it was a very good quality of sake. Otherwise, we would have had to tip the sake out and that would have been a waste.

We had our lunch of sandwiches on the train back to Takamatsu. We were saying goodbye to yet another tour member. One of the John's (remember, ...

From Hakata to Takamatsu via Naoshima Island

... wanted it to be. We bought our lunch for a boat ride out to Naoshima Island. We walked over to the port which was only a few minutes away. We were taking the slow boat out over the Seto Inland Sea, which took about an hour.

It was a great day to be out on the water. The view of the Inland Sea was great although the view of the Naoshima Port wasn't quite so. Sydney Harbour is still the best as far as I am concerned.

Next was a couple of days at Takamatsu on the middle island of Shikuko.
This is a port city where we took a ferry trip to Shodoshima. This is the largest island in the area. Way back in 1908 the Japanese Government decide to start an olive growing industry since the climate is very Mediterranean.
