... Helen tried the White bean with cherry leaf which is the seasonal speciality which was really very good. Chris & Nia opted for the chocolate fillings. Full of sake & various foods we went to the castle which is heritage listed. Volunteers offer a free guiding service so we availed ourselves of this and had a very entertaining and informative two hours with our personal guide. We climbed right to the top of the castle and learnt a lot about castles and Japan in general. ...

There are no beds as the maids come to lay out the futon mattresses at 7pm. When Nia unpacked her bag she found her camera... Had to happen sooner or later. The rain has been falling since early this morning, and doesnt look like it will stop any time soon. After the free hotel breakfast we grab our umbrellas and head out. Still managed to see a lot, and the town is very crowded with tourists. We spend quite a bit of time inside the historic little shops sampling all types of food and pickles, miso soup, rice crackers etc. In fact we skip lunch as we eat so many samples.

Lots of people in Japan seem to adore little dogs, they are very cute, very tiny, poodle like for the most part. The play pen was quite a bit area, and had ramps and little jumps to exercise the dogs. We didn't see anything for the kids!

      ... phew!

Heading into town we visit the Sanmachi-juji area where traditional wooden merchant houses are located for which Takayama is famous. We sample some Sake (rice wine), eat Sansai Ryori - dishes of local Hida beef roasted on a magnolia leaf above charcoal brazier with local mountain vegetables, ferns and wild herbs in an old merchant house. When I say eat I mean with difficulty as we did not know what went with what (it was hard to ...
