    ... to our hotel. We were pretty exhausted after a day of walking and shopping so we relaxed for a couple of hours before heading out for dinner.     ... br> Beppu is famous for being a town filled with hot springs and onsen, so after dropping our bags off we went to explore some of the town. We ended up grabbing a bento box lunch from a small shop and went to sit by the beach front.

    ... beautiful ginkgo trees, plum tree gardens, stone walls and steps. There is also a small moat near the Hazekata Gate. There is also an underground passageway, called the Kuragari-Truro, as it is dark even during the day (there are lights so you can see your way) and it is the official entrance to the palace - one of the few examples of palaces with this type of underground passage. The beams used in the passageway are whole trees.

    We went into one of the local eating places for lunch. They have a system where you buy a ticket for what you want to eat - there are pictures available to help you with your choice. We were helped by the waitress who worked there, who was from Nepal, living in Japan while studying Japanese. she told us she worked 50 hours a week and considered herself well paid. Goodness knows when she had time to study. She spoke very good English ...
