... lovely Australian guy with great taste in music, and Scout. This morning we went for a swim in the river - it was surprisingly cold but wonderfully refreshing! And now we're saying a fond goodbye to Nikko, and heading off to Kyoto with a bottle full of fresh mountain water from Scout's 42foot-deep well (that he dug himself). This stop has really been a pleasantly surprising highlight of the trip thus far - hopefully we'll make it back some day.

We had to leave the bullet train at one small town to pick up the regular train on the Nikko line and just missed our next train so we had an hour's wait until the next one. I am so glad we had this wait because here we had one of those travel moments you just have to love.

This lovely villa was a summer residence and retreat house for the Imperial family during the 20th Century, and was built in the Edo and Meiji architectural styles. I thought it was awesome how none of the wooden joints contained nails, screws, or any type of adhesive. ... standing next to me and they were curious about me not wearing shoes. That started up a nice conversation about where i was from and what they were doing here. One of the guys introduced himself and i don't know his japanese name anymore but he said it meant 'small mountain' in english. After a while our buses came and we said goodbye. The bus took me to the station and two trains and 2 hours later i was in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
