... me onto the bus bound for kanbayashi onsen. Similarly to the previous two days the weather was miserable on the 40 minute bus ride, with clouds hanging low over the mountains that surround Nagano. This made me thankful that I had decided against visiting Mt Fuji today as it would have been totally immersed in cloud. We returned to the hotel for a nap. The bad thing about staying at a ryokan is that there is no bed. The futons are rolled up during the day and rolled out for us during dinner. Joseph and to drag out two futons for me to nap in. Slept for about an hour and woke up just in time to have a shower and to go down for ...

... on a hot plate ourselves plus an assortment of other meats and pickles as well as squid guts. Needless to say, our John was the only one to eat the stuff. Even Takako refused to touch it. The rice had only been harvested a few weeks ago so this would have been the freshest rice that I have ever tasted.

Most of the food was seafood so Takako had arranged for Joseph to have crumbed chicken instead. There was an egg custard ...
