... on triangular blocks whilst having huge stone tablets placed on their thighs. Nice. Dinner was the local speciality of Hida beef which is highly marbled and cooked at your table. Mine was served with shiitake mushrooms, miso soup, rice and vegetables I didn't recognise. Nice enough but I won't be hunting it out at home. All in all a great start to the Japanese adventure. I travelled to Matsumoto with an old friend from university. On the first day of the trip, we visited Matsumoto Castle and walked around the streets of Matsumoto, tasting some local foods including basashi, sanzokuyaki and sansei, local sake. Sometimes lockers are provided for shoes (with a key!), sometimes just a slot, and frequently one is given a plastic bag in which to carry them around. Inside and out, everything is pristine and free of litter, which is a bit surprising because garbage cans seem not to exist outside, and even inside, they tend to be very small. One wonders what people do with garbage. It has also occurred to ...

... for the 2011 great East earthquake/ Tsunami victims at the temple so it made for an interesting visit, again I didn't really understand what was going on due to the language but it was clear it was an important event, my visitor ticket also included a visit to the inner sanctum which is a pitch black passageway that you walk through in precession under the main temple, a very bizarre experience as a sense of slight panic sets in as you feel your way along the wall ...
