... Helen tried the White bean with cherry leaf which is the seasonal speciality which was really very good. Chris & Nia opted for the chocolate fillings. Full of sake & various foods we went to the castle which is heritage listed. Volunteers offer a free guiding service so we availed ourselves of this and had a very entertaining and informative two hours with our personal guide. We climbed right to the top of the castle and learnt a lot about castles and Japan in general. ...

There are no beds as the maids come to lay out the futon mattresses at 7pm. When Nia unpacked her bag she found her camera... Had to happen sooner or later. The rain has been falling since early this morning, and doesnt look like it will stop any time soon. After the free hotel breakfast we grab our umbrellas and head out. Still managed to see a lot, and the town is very crowded with tourists. We spend quite a bit of time inside the historic little shops sampling all types of food and pickles, miso soup, rice crackers etc. In fact we skip lunch as we eat so many samples.

... area. Absolutely gorgeous scenery and we tried to get a few shots to show how lovely it all looked. Another feature of the trip was the numbr of tunnels under the mountains that we drove through, one tunnel was just short of 5ks long. Not just straight through the mountains in a straight line but the tunnels appeared to wind around the mountains. Quite a feat of engineering.

... other hand ate his fill enough to politely say "goshiso-usama deshita" which means it was a real feast, which put the biggest of smiles on our hosts face.

Off to the Hida village to see old traditional Japanese houses and way of life. Although it was only ten minutes by bus we were amazed at how much snow there was - it was a few feet deep in places and some of the houses were cordoned off for safety. Their life seemed very tough.
