... Things I learnt: Hannah - the castle looked like it had 4 storeys but it actually had 5 because it had a secret floor. Ben - that the Noh actors were just ordinary people.

Things that amazed me: Hannah - the castle because it didn't look like a castle and it looked more like a temple. Ben - the garden in the castle because it had lots of flowers and stuff.

The funniest bit: Hannah and Ben - Ben getting freaked out by the samurai at the ...

... you going there?" - like we were heading off to some backwater, deadbeat area...kind of got us worried. But, the train trip alleviated some of that worry, as it really was beautiful. Take away the thousands of signs in Japanese, and the odd temple or two, and it could easily have passed for somewhere in Europe with the mountains covered in pine trees and a river running along the train line..

After a warm ryokan farewell we visited the fabulous Matsumoto Castle amid glorious cherry blossoms. A visit to the Daio Wasabi Farm (where we had wasabi ice-cream!) was next,then our journey took us through beautiful snow-covered mountains via dozens of amazing tunnels to the lovely town of Takayama. ... we had a traditional dinner in the minshuku, all beautiful dishes seated at the flor and sharing the experience with a French couple. The last night we went to Le Midi a fantastic French meal  of several courses with wine. All for $130 for the two of us. We were the only customers in the lovely little restaurant.
