Snow monkeys, rotemburo and a rather pleasant meal
... Ryokan, Shimaya, and the owners were very helpful. They seemed bothered that we might be bored as we had already seen the monkeys, so recommended a walking trip around the old town. We headed off and found a tall statue, Heiwakannon-dori, the Goddess of Mercy and World Peace. A board explained that this impressive statue had been melted down during WW2 as the Japanese military were running out of metal.

... je de kans hebt gekregen om in een apenkooi in de zoo binnen te lopen, maar het went verrassend snel dat je plaats moet maken voor een moeder die met haar jong langs wil of even opzij moet springen omdat 2 apen ruzie aan het maken zijn en daarbij geen zin hebben om rekening te houden met de bezoekers rondom hen.
Een paar uur en een goede 300 foto’s later keer ik terug richting mijn hotel. Onderweg doorheen het bos passeer ik een groepje van ongeveer 15 apen. ...

We had breakfast, then went for one last soak in the outdoor tub, grateful for the umbrellas hanging by the back door. It was lovely to sit in the hot water, looking out over a landscape quietly disappearing under a blanket of snow.

After all, I was fully satisfied with the museum, departing for Shirahatanoyu bathhouse near Yubatake. There were three public bathhouses for free in Kusatsu and Shirahatanoyu was one of them. The bathhouse had two tubs and they were very small, accommodating only a few people at once ...
