The artist Nakajima lived here so we went to see his work mostly depicting cherry blossoms, but there were works by other artists that to our surprise included Ayers Rock (Uluru). A lovely young woman saw me looking at a tree I clearly did not recognise. She explained it was a chestnut tree and showed me the hairy brown fruit, and said the little lane we were standing in was called ...

... and make my way to the inn for the night. When I told the tourism info office that I was staying at the Kanoe Inn above Togari Nozawaonsen, they were full of praise for this place as having good food and accommodations. They were not wrong! I had the best meal of my trip (a traditional Kaiseki multi-course one) so far in Japan which featured river salmon sashimi, chestnut rice, various local mountain vegetables, soba, eel and an extra ...
