Now I've joined up with the rest of the G Adventures tour my Japanese trip can start properly. Our first destination, Takayama is in the mountains and we took 2 trains out of Tokyo to reach it. The first was a bullet train which is very cool although I don't think it hit the top speed of 280km/h. Lunch was a bento box bought at the station. I'm not entirely sure what my choice contained but there was definitely sushi and tofu. I know ...

I travelled to Matsumoto with an old friend from university. On the first day of the trip, we visited Matsumoto Castle and walked around the streets of Matsumoto, tasting some local foods including basashi, sanzokuyaki and sansei, local sake. On the next day, we drove along Venus Line, stopping at Utsukushigahara Highland and Mt Kirigamine.

... the various gods. They are manipulated with strings from inside the covered box of the float. The most elaborate requires 8 puppet masters, each managing 4 strings to make the puppets do circus tricks and make other complex movements, There are special thick walled storehouses with tall doors which house the floats not currently on display. To see this parade one needs to come either April 12--13 or October 9th and 10th. It would be a most unique ...

... was goodbye Matsumoto to head for Takayama further West, I managed to get a half price bus ticket as I was a holder of my current JRE rail pass so it was to be quite a spectacular sight riding the bus to Takayama through the winding mountain roads, arrival at Takayama initially didn't feel great, very very touristy, I know I'm a tourist too but it just felt a bit too much as the next bus loads or train passengers where deposited into the already overcrowded old town ...
