... you going there?" - like we were heading off to some backwater, deadbeat area...kind of got us worried. But, the train trip alleviated some of that worry, as it really was beautiful. Take away the thousands of signs in Japanese, and the odd temple or two, and it could easily have passed for somewhere in Europe with the mountains covered in pine trees and a river running along the train line..

But the weather is not so good in the mountains. It was raining the night I got here and the next morning. However, I didn't let it affect me and took the opportunity to go to the art deco/modern art museum. And the teddy bear museum!!!!! The Art Deco museum was good but had limited displays - especially for its size. But some nice pieces of glass ...

After a warm ryokan farewell we visited the fabulous Matsumoto Castle amid glorious cherry blossoms. A visit to the Daio Wasabi Farm (where we had wasabi ice-cream!) was next,then our journey took us through beautiful snow-covered mountains via dozens of amazing tunnels to the lovely town of Takayama. A three hour train journey through Alps to reach Takayama, then a ten minute walk to our old fashioned minshuku. Spent the next three days walking round thislittle town with its quaint old buildings and several bridges over the river. Checked out the morning market and all the lovely craft shops. Quite  cold, even got snowed on. Had three great dinners while in atakayama. First night was some delicious Hida beef we cooked at table top BBQ. ...
