I read several articles about hiking the Old Tokaido trail. However, there was some variability with the information. One Japan lesson I’ve learned is since we cannot often read the best source of information we have to approach most outings with a sense of adventure and flexibility. Initially I’d read that you could walk all the way to Hakone Yumoto station in 3.5 hours via this 400 year old highway. I made a plan for the day. In the morning, ...

There was no shower in ...

Today at breakfast we were seated at the other side of the room where the printed placements reflected the names of the towers we could view. Yesterday's placements depicted that view and we pity the poor trainee who might muck the placemats up! After receiving such attention to her personal meal requirements, they must have been happy to wave Naomi off. Just as well we still had Kaoru (our guide) to help us navigate our way to Shinjuku station, though the unforgiving ticket gates ...

... and with the thick cloud cover, there were no views either. We trekked for a steady and fairly steep three and a half hours to the Eighth Station where we were booked in to a mountain hut "for the night", with the plan of getting up in the early hours to summit in time for sunrise. There are huts all the way up Mount Fuji, managed and serviced by a team of people, providing snacks, drinks, meals and temporary rest areas. They also provide clean toilets all the way up ...
