Dinner tonight is in their French restaurant. We are welcomed by an English speaking waiter from Sri Lanka. Knowing he would have English speaking guests, he had kindly translated tonight's menu into English and printed it out for us. The food is surprisingly delicious and beautifully plated, you don't quite expect a French chef in a family type resort in Kusatsu. ... speaks very little English, unfortunately we don't speak Japanese... We receive all kind of vouchers for dinner, breakfast, onsen elsewhere as well as information in Japanese. To the best of her abilities she explains that there is only wifi in the lounge. When we are about to go to our room an older staff member informs us that we do have wifi in the room after all. The snow monkeys were amazing! They have no fear of tourists, despite insinuations of their ferociousness. You can walk right up to many of them without them scampering away. We were surprised by how many baby monkeys there were — dozens! Although we were only in their area for about an hour, we witnessed many moments, including one of the older monkeys holding a younger one for warmth, several of the younger monkeys playing together, all ...

... Macaque monkeys. They are everywhere, must be 100 or more from little babies to adults. The adults are about 3 foot tall. They are busy foraging in the snow for food. We are almost invisible to the monkeys, as they are not bothered at all by people. You can get up very close to them and they will even come and sit next to you.

The hotel at the airport was, well an airport hotel so not much write home about… but Japan on the other hand…

Can’t wait to chat to our Japanese friends back at JSK to explain what a country they’ve got.
