Breakfast in the hotel which was an odd mix of Japanese with some western options. You can hear gunshots all the time, as we are in an orchard area they use it to frighten the birds so they won't ruin the fruit. The apples are HUGE and delicious. Excitement today as the first trip on the Shinkansen to Nagano up in the mountains where the Winter Olympics were held in 1998. Correct pronunciation is Nag...an..o. But first we have to do a train transfer from Shinagawa to Tokyo at peak hour! First leg easy as we knew Shinagawa and were surprised to see the station almost deserted, guess it is because most of the commuters are using the Metro. ... as the sun began to burn through the clouds and the temperature increased. I had hoped to get to the restaurant by noon but the amount of climbing and stopping to take photos slowed me down. It was a little over 20 km from the train station to get to Yudanaka and the snow monkeys and I took a route that ran up by the side of the mountain and through fields of fruit trees. The view of the valley below and the mountains rising sharply above it was gorgeous.
