Leaving our bags at the hotel we took taxis to the railway station for the shinkansen, or bullet train. We were surprised to see that it was snowing as we hadn't expected snow as far south as Kyoto. It had been cold and we had been glad of our lined walking trousers, thermals hats and thick gloves to insulate us as we explored the temples etc but we had not expected snow. While watching the Japanese news in the foyer we noted that Nagano had just received an identical amount of snow overnight to our home in Newcastle. 0.0mm.

After about a minute of making gestures of closing a door and showing them my empty hands, and pointing in the direction of our room, I think they either understood that I'd either locked the key in the room, or lost my mind. Either way they seemed to accept that as a valid reason why I wasn't handing the key back, and I was allowed to leave.
