We arranged to go snow shoeing today. Our guest house host is a mountain guide so he is taking us out for an adventure which is great. We can only do a half day today due to the weather coming in snowy in the afternoon but that is fine, still gives us a taste of it. We got kitted out with boots and snow shoes and poles and bundled into the van to head up the road. It is about 2* so not too chilly. We had to get the right balance of warm but not ...

Today is the day to venture up to the Japanese Alps to Myokokogan. Marina was lovely enough to drop us over to the train rather than us having to go all the way back down to Nagano and back up on the other line. The train had few other tourist looking mobs on it heading up to the ski resorts. It was a pretty journey up through the hills with the snow getting deeper and deeper. We ...

The temple is quite interesting and great architecture. It is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan. It was founded in the 7 th century and the current building dates back from 1707. It is stated to be a national treasure. On the way up to the temple we had ...

... walk to the park where the monkeys are, it sounded more arduous than it was. It was certainly colder up that way and a lot more snow. The walk in was lovely, a tiny bit slippery in some parts but very pretty through the forest. After paying 500Y we walked around the river and there they were. The first ones we spotted were sitting in the snow by the river and a few were running around. Then we got into the section where the hot water ...

... about one and a half hours and we were in Nagano. Our accommodation is just a few train stops past Nagano in Suzaka so we found the train for this line and headed on up on the snow monkey express train. Our guesthouse is soo cute, Guesthouse Kura, www.ghkura.com It is an old historic building and is in the traditional style with rice paper walls between rooms and tatami matting on the floor. Our beds are futon mattresses with thick luxurious bedding, electric blankets and ...
