'The Wave' and a distinct lack of money!

... and pictures of japanese ladies. We spent the afternoon exploring the town and Mark had a chestnut icecream- the place is also reknowned for its chestnut confectionary. By this point we had spent all of the cash we had on us and were directed to 2 atms nearby, however neither would accept our cards (all visa) even though they had the visa logo on them. These were the only places to get money out in the whole town and we had no other way of getting any, arggh! So we ...

Matsumoto and Nagano: Castle v. Temple

... which lies about 30 minutes train ride west of central, Imperial palace Tokyo, thigns got really, really stressful. Tons of people, which was fine except I had my massive suitcase and for whatever reason, there's a lack of elevators. And escalators sometimes only reach half way up a floor so you have to drag your bag up the remaining flights of stairs. All this because I needed to buy a Keio bus ticket to get to Fuji later. But Shinjuku station has 2 ...

Snow Monkeys and winter hillside treks

... from 9-5pm and we naturally got there too late.

I love bullet trains in Japan. We got from Nagano back to Tokyo in the space of an hour and a half and summing up enough energy we found our ludicrously small hostel with a kitchen meant for 40 guests consisting of two hobs and a hot plate and crawled into bed exhausted!

Ooh, look, Japanese food. I'm hungry...

... 2cm longer then I am tall, and reverberate loudly whenever impacted by your arm every time you forget that there's no bed head / side of bed to hang your arms / legs over... From Osaka, it was back to Tokyo, western food, and Qantas club. Sipping champas whilst having a hot shower in a bathroom in which you could actually swing a cat (should you so desire). Goodbye unidentified raw offerings from the sea and Shinkansen, hello steak, chips and delayed flights.

Monkey Magic in Nagano-Ken

I am going to keep the chat to a minimum here and let the (many) photos do the talking. I went to Nagano to see the "Snow Monkeys". They were awesome. After a short 2km hike through snowy forested mountains, suddenly there were monkeys running across the path - and they literally came within an inch of my feet! Well worth the visit.

Monkeys, Karaoke and Bananas (or lack thereof!)

We spent a fantastic four nights in Nagano with Brian and Takako. On our first day there, I decided to go to the hairdresser and have my hair chemically straightened! The Japanese invented this treatment and so where better to have it done (and for so cheap!?) Takako very kindly came with me and explained to the girl what i wanted done. So I had a lovely relaxing day which was needed after the madness of Tokyo! We had somne lovely nights with some ...

Made it!

We landed in Tokyo last night and stayed the night at the Nikko Narita Hotel. This morning we took the shuttle back to the airport and then took the train to Ueda Station, where we met four gracious folks from Tomi City. They took us to a nice lunch of soba noodles and other tasty bits. Then, we stopped at the home where the Courtains are staying, and got to see a traditional Japanese home. Our hostess served us some locally grown fruit--huge, dark ...

Day Trip to Nagano

We took the Shinkansen to Nagano using our rail pass and after arriving found out which bus to catch out to M-Wave, the ice skating rink used in the winter Olympics. We had never been ice skating so were willing to give it a try.

Took an old wooden floored bus out to M-Wave and walked past a sign in Japanese then paid for our ticket to the ...
