Today I headed off North to Nagano on a morning bullet train from Tokyo. I will be using Nagano as a base for visiting other locations over my 2 day stay here due to its ease of commuting back to Tokyo. My plan for this first day was to arrive in Nagano, drop my bags off at the station luggage lockers and then head on a bus out to Jigokudani wild snow monkey park. This all went to plan thanks to the helpful people in the information ...

... bought a couple of things. We drafted into Gondo Arcade Street, which is an enclosed mall area stretching down a whole street or two. We stopped after the first street as going any further would take us further away from the hotel.

We decided to look for some dinner as it was now heading towards 6.30pm. There was a small restaurant selling noodles, fried rice and gyoza so we settled for a fried rice ...

The hotel had organised a morning walk at 6.30am. We were driven to near Kurobe River to see the sunrise at the gorge. There were monkeys playing and sitting on the road. Some didn't care that a car/bus was coming along and continued grooming. The Kurobe Gorge is the largest V-shaped gorge in Japan.

We were then driven to another ...

... a lot more. We stopped by a museum by the train station and just walked around the streets of Unazuki Onsen. Had a late lunch of sandwiches at the Mozart Cafe. There were no photos of the food except for the cakes. The others at the cafe said to order the sandwiches, so we did. When the plate came out, there were 8 pieces of sandwiches and we would just share the plate. Then three more plates of sandwiches tuned up. We ...

... we were early and the rooms weren't ready, we opted to take the small Kurobe Gorge Railway train up to the gorge. Five didn't go. We had left John and Joan back at the previous train stop as they are an older couple and did not want to stay in a ryokan. There were 16 of us going and Owen was going to stay behind. In order to return back to the hotel in time for dinner at 6.30pm, we could not go right to the end of the line. We had ...
