Elise's IV scare and Hair washes

... really scary and I'm just so relieved that she is better. Oh, and in case you were wondering, 2 days of IV (including the antibiotic) plus the doctor’s appointment cost about 13 USD.

Despite Elise’s illness, we very much enjoyed staying in Qingtian for 9 days. That was the longest we stayed in one place for the whole trip. Add to that: our generous relatives who helped with celebrating the holiday, treated us to ...

China's One Child Policy

... assume that I am from here, that I married a foreigner (since the kids are obviously not 100% Chinese), and that we had the kids overseas. They think we’re just back visiting family or that the kids are being brought up here, so that they speak Chinese and the local Qingtian dialect. It is actually quite refreshing to see all the babies and toddlers and families with more than one child.

Gravesite & Fireworks

... in the city. We actually used Roman candles, firecrackers, M-80s and some cones that made awesome spark displays. Roman candles shoot fireballs with a firecracker in the center that blew up after shot. The firecrackers we set off individually and sometimes we emptied out the gunpowder onto a rock and lit it for a big flare. M-80s are sticks of dynamite that could blow up a hand. Last of all, the cones shot green colored sparks.

My Great Grandfather's old house

... car. My mom said that her father used to say that it took more than ½ a day to walk to the city center. Here is a picture of our great grandfather’s house. It included all 3 parts in this picture. My mom said when they were little, they visited and it was one huge (all connected) 2 story house. My ‘Tai-Gung’ (great grandfather) was a ...

... 3). The whole country was off from Oct 1-8. We planned to stay in Qingtian until the holiday was over, to avoid all the crowds traveling at the same time. There was supposed to be 200 million people traveling over that week. We figured avoiding that would be a good idea!

My grandparents’ hometown, Qingtian, is known for being a mountainous area with carvable rock. Here’s an ...

Teaching in China

... so are my students. I got grade 8's and the majority of them are incredibly rambunctious, messy, and loud. Every time I come into my classroom after lunch, the room is in shambles. I can't lock my door so it's invaded when I'm not there. They write all over what I have written on the board if they haven't erased it. Someone evidently tried to set fire to my blackboard seeing as there were two lit matches on the tray and two nice ...

The Longmen Caves N Guanlin Si N Tragedy Strikes

... road where we turned left. Don't get too carried away with trying to spot a sign for the temple as this is where Bus No: 81 ends and it is right across the road from the temple. Midterm Marathon

... to try to make me quit studying this language. Everyday our teachers give us 40-50 new Chinese characters that we are supposed to be able to learn how to write from memory overnight. The next morning at 8 o'clock, our teacher stands at the front of the class and tauntingly reads off three sentences chock full of these words that she knows we can't write. We students do our best to scribble whatever we can down onto the paper and hand it in, humiliated. Now, ting xie might not sound ...
