... entrance and the small, fast-flowing rivers are a constant presence, running down the middle of the street over a series of minor waterfalls, or flowing down one side or the other, crossed by picturesque hump-backed stone bridges. The streets are narrow and cobbled and the buildings are . . . . well, that is really the problem. The buildings are a series of shops, restaurants, tour agencies, street after street after street. They all seem to be catering for ...

The ticket price is 50RMB. After about 300m, I came upon Jane's Guesthouse, run by Tibetan Jane. She told me where to get on the trail and off I went. Many people do this hike in either one day (pushing it) but more will do it in two days, staying over at ...

Jane's guest house was a nice place to stay but Jane is a bit annoying. as our visas are running out, we decided to go the next morning to Dali, on the bus for 5 hours.

The problem was, this trail was straight up. This lady was like a deer. She practically sprinted up the hill, killing me in the process. Nothing like getting showed up by a 50 year old woman in China. After a grueling hike up the mountain to the main trail we learned that we had passed the guest house where we ...
Lijiang, China mericanomad... Venice of the Orient. The Chinese seem to really enjoy themselves here. Everybody is very relaxed and friendly. Several Chinese school girls were eager to talk to me and ask me questions in English. A middle-age group of Chinese wanted their picture taken with me. Do you think they recognized me from my Irish drinking team role in Beerfest? Though several street sections are very commercial-oriented, each side lined with oodles of ...
Lijiang, China pecoskid... had been admiring, turned out to be over the path. We plucked up our courage, and climbed over the rocks to reach the other side, a little shaken. After the adrenaline wore off, we started to feel really wet, and cold, and the path was getting slippier. We stopped of at a guesthouse for a hot chocolate, and I did a massive poo whilst looking out to the mountains... beautiful. About an hour more walking and we reached halfway. The climb down was a ladder, so we ...

The dog - whom we named Flip - followed us the whole way and stayed the night too!! Drinks were offered and within 15 minutes we sat down to yak meat, pork, cauliflower, egg plant, squash and potato dishes. That woman and her daughter made Jamie Oliver look like an amateur!! Shattered after our long day, we made it to bed.
