      ... Valga. The bus driver played a video on Estonia, much of which was familiar to us over the last five full days.

      It's only 186k to Riga by 0850 but we have many stops and diversions. The landscape is green.

      The town of Valga is the same on both sides of the border. It is a sleepy place with many wooden buildings. We reached Latvia at 0910, Riga some 156k away.

      ... had a room, albeit a bed in a dorm, in a bad hostel! We were also still sitting in a pub 400 kms away in Riga, in another country! So, $180 later..... Doh!!! Helena, our waitress, was awesome and even lent us her phone so we could make contact with hotels in Vilnius. Around 11 pm, we finally managed to get a Friday night booked into a fancy Spa Resort at Trakai, 30 kms out of Vilnius for the Friday night and into the Raddison Hotel in the city centre ...

      Despite the fact that our air plane seems to want to attempt landing upside-down, we arrive quite safely (though slightly queasy) in Riga, thanks to the brave efforts of our Baltic Air pilot. We find that it is extremely windy in the capital of Latvia, which is unfortunate since we didn't bring a coat! We decide to enjoy the cold while it lasts; it's going be very very hot when we get to Central Asia!

      ... old, but nice looking buildings. All of these cities offer a free walking tour which mostly start at midday and take two to two and half hours. This time there was a choice between a walk in the old city versus one in the newer districts so I did the latter. The river and station formed the dividing line between the two parts and lead to the so-called Russian quarter.
