    ... stumbled upon an animal bench, a kitty litter box, and a bowl of cat food. What the f***?

    Now, finding all these cat paraphernalia, I logically expected to find a stray cat somewhere, too! But there was no cat to be found! I finally did locate something grey and furry hidden away underneath the radiator.

    ... equipment that lurks deep in a scary part of one's psyche.

    And a long walk, partly through the lovely park, and via a little bottle shop which also sold chips and things (we were actually on the hunt for some fruit; we'd seen some earlier when we were still stuffed with breakfast.) Back to our hotel for a few hours down-time before setting out for a walk along the river and back through the park.

    ... was from the top of a new shopping centre. A great view and another time of silence and reflection. The night was old and we headed back. I was able to crash while Viktorija was busy with errands. She was able to turn her double bed into two singles. She lives in a hostel and the room is comfy and warm. She offers me a homemade liquer before lights out, I forget what it was but it tasted good!

    ... one too, if their name is Jani (Jani is the name of the festival in Latvian).

    The rule about the festival is that you have to stay out until the first bird sings when the sun comes up the next morning. We powered through with beer, food, and dancing and I saw the sun come up about 4 am (it only went down around 1 am). Waking up for 11 am check out was not fun the next morning, but not the end of the world.

    ... to a visit by Pope John Paul II in 1993. Quite a interesting place.

    There are no formalities crossing the border from Lithuania to Latvia as both are members of the EU. Our guide gave some statistics as we neared Riga as follows; population of Latvia 2.7 million with Riga having 500,000 making it the largest capital of the Baltic States. Only 52% of the population are Latvians. Average income is €500 ...
