Arrived in New Zealand and picked up our little camper van - it's a rugby world cup special!
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand carolandowen... hiking in and around Auckland. Mat and I walked all the way to Mount Eden and then to One Tree Hill which is about 10km away from downtown. Both of those are volcanoes so that brings our total so far to climbing 3 volcanoes in 2 days.
It was my bright idea to go down to the bottom of the crater on Mt Eden (yes, I am that little pink dot in the picture) but it wasn't until we circumnavigated it that we realized that there were signs ...
... an afternoon of climbing (for Daniel, Lucy, Daddy, Issy and Emily.) Daniel and Lucy had such a fantastic time at Clip and Climb last year that they have spent much of the last year talking about it. Climb Zone is based on the same concept but once you have paid you can stay as long as you like. The children loved it and spent a good couple of hours climbing, with a short beak in the middle for birthday cake and drinks ...

... the next day and headed down to the harbor for our dolphin cruise. We saw some right away but couldn't swim with them because there was a baby in the group - small group anyway. The cruise took us around to a bunch of other cool things in the Bay of Islands but we didn't see any more dolphins, which was upsetting. We really wanted to swim with them - maybe somewhere else we'll get the chance. Either way, we had a lot of ...
Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand unbound... but it did not take away from the experience. As we stood in total darkness, rain beating down on us, listening to Tawhiri sing and looking at the stars it was definitely something I will remember and really enjoyed.
The following day was lovely and sunny so we spent it at the pier, playground and beach.
After a very enjoyable few days in the Hokianga we all got the bus back to Auckland. The bus stopped at Waipoua Forest for everyone to see the trees. In the ...
... ins with crocodiles. Leave for Bali in the evening. April 3 - The beginning of Indonesia. We land on Bali and will have to work our way up three islands in order to leave from Padang, on Sumatra in 16 days. On the to-do list in Indo: fancy cocktails on the beach in Bali, climbing a volcano at sunrise, seeing some very elaborate and significant temples (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam are the main historical and present-day religions in Indo ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand jasi... dropper. A few heavy showers had me soaked through. The cycle shorts became uncomfortable, and the wet shoes were the worst. While trying to bustle off the side of the road to get some shelter from the weather I must have run over a dead gorse frond - enough to give me my first puncture in NZ fack it. After eating lunch in Tauranga, i was unsure weather to stay or push on, finally riding half a k northwards before turning back and settling into the most expensive backpackers in ...
Warkworth, North Island, New Zealand goldenbez... we reached the new apartment. At that point Merina fell asleep, and Devon zoned out in front of the television. Mark and I went foraging for food. The grocery store really wasn't that far away; I know this, because we subsequently made several trips. But, that day, it felt like it was on the far side of the city. Purchasing groceries took a supreme act of concentration (but at least we could read all the labels !!), and I am sure it was uphill both ways. I do know ...

< br>After a fairly late breakfast Ken and I headed down to the observation deck at Sky Tower, by far Auckland’s tallest building at 328 metres. While it gave the usual bird’s eye view of the city that can be found in similar towers in countless other cities, it was amazing to watch the weather changing dramatically as rain clouds swept past at an incredible ...
