Today was bittersweet as it was our last day with the Shifrins and our time in Maine was drawing to a close. Besides, we needed to start thinking about things like getting the kids to the Doctor so they could enrol in school, setting up our apartment and, in general, beginning the process of readying ourselves to get back into a routine and starting school and work!!!! Therefore, what better way to enjoy our final day then to pack up the car and head back down to Dummers ...

... prepare for the arrival home of Jess and Sara.
When we were all reunited, everyone fed and kids tucked into bed, we sat down for our nightly ritual of an evening board game, once more it was Settlers of Catan. When we went to sleep tonight the tally stood at Tim 2, Brett 2, Sara 0, and Jess 0. ... at the back of the line of 4. At the first rest stop, everyone else in the group had delicate beads of sweat on their brows and when you looked at Tim, water was running in rivulets down his face and neck and his shirt had completely changed to a darker shade. However, walking is half mental, or so Tim kept telling himself and ...

The great thing about staying with Brett and Sara is that the meals are never boring, the variety is endless and it is all homemade and made with fresh, local ingredients. This morning we were served whole wheat waffles and pancakes with fresh Maine blueberries. At this point I should add that one of Brett's favorite lines and one that he trotted out at least once a day, was: "they're made with whole wheat flour, so they're healthy and ...

    Back with friends

We woke up late and had a lazy morning lying around, having showers and cleaning up our act while we awaited for the return of our friends; Brett (whom Tim met in 1995 when he started teaching in Maine) his wife Sara, and their children Mia (11) and Eli (7). In order to avoid future confusion, while we are in Weld Eli Shifrin will be "Little E" and Eli Heidmann "Big E". Just as we were sitting down for lunch, the Shifrins all arrived home and there was general hubbub as ...
