    Very few people have washing machines and dryers here in Kerala. But everyone has a "washing stone" in the back yard. It is a large concrete block. (See Photo.) It usually has a stiff bristle brush and a bar of soap on it, or nearby. The lady of the house brings the clothes out in a bucket of water and then proceeds to soap them up, scrub them with the brush, and WACK them against the stone. Then they are hung on a line to dry.
