... Beach, and we had a pleasant walk along the beach with a lovely (and free) view of the 17 Mile Drive area. We then continued down the coast (more mountain climbing driving for Paul) and tried to get the kids to continue with their school work. A few miles just north of San Simeon, we came across the Elephant Seal Rookery and it was one of the neatest things we have seen so far. ...

La Californie a beau être en état de sécheresse, "California is in a state of drought" qu'ils ont placardé partout, moi, quand y a moyen de prendre une douche gratuite, j'te vide le ballon d'eau chaude du RV Park à vitesse grand V... ... because there was no a/c), was a startling 107 degrees. Rich farmlands contrasted with the otherwise dry climate and field after field of dry, golden grass. As we traveled, clouds started to gather and by the time we reached the coast it had cooled down a startling 40 degrees, back to the 60's.

We checked in to our hotel in San Simeon about 8:00 pm, early for us and in time to take a quick walk to the beach just behind our hotel ...

We left LA and headed north on California Highway 1. We decided we would drive as far as we wanted for the day and then find a place to camp on the beach. As we made our way up the California coast, driving through Malibu and Santa Monica we were both in awe of the beautiful scenery. The blue of the ocean was very similar to the water on the southern Florida coast and in the Gulf of Mexico - just magnificent. We had ocean on one side of the car and mountains on the other - ...
