... 9 a.m. Meanwhile, balloon pilots unwilling to wait for the “go” order towed their balloons to spots around the city. Anywhere they found a large enough flat spot, they were lighting and launching. The sky began to fill with balloons even before the official launch and by about 9:30 as many as 150 balloons were aloft in the morning sun. Quite a sight, which Ray failed to adequately capture in the attached photos.
