... on my mind the day before and I had told a story just a few days prior of Barry flying his Mom in my helicopter. She had been a WAC and flown the B-26 bomber. Barry had flown his Mom in the Jet Ranger to meet a up with a B-26 and its crew down the coast from us in southern California. ... from the Lincoln Memorial. So within a few minutes walk we were at the War Memorial and "The Mall" which I found out was not in fact a hidden shopping mall! On our first night in Washington we felt like a cheap night in and some healthy food so I volunteered to take a walk to a grocery store a 'few' roads up on R street, which did look too far according to the free tourist map. It turned out to be a one hour hike both ways and the pouring rain did not make it ...

The hotel is in a very convenient location, walking distance to the White House, Smithsonian, etc. We went to the White House first, taking pictures in front of and through the wire fence.
