A Blackpool like seaside town, Carmel is not! We were too early to check in so walked ...

... before reaching the enormous castle! It was all terribly well organised in the great American way and we were given a guided tour of the bottom part of the place. No expense was spared in the building and I guess it fulfilled his dream, but to me the place was grotesque, with the influence of Italy, France and Spain dominant but totally mixed up in all the stone work, carvings and tapestries! There was a huge pool and deck area (sadly the pool was empty due to the local ...

... today was a Quality Inn in the Dunes, near Monterey. Let's see what quality Quality can muster. The suburbs of SF are as grubby and disappointing as most cities and one yearns to escape from the drabness. I have never had to stop for an orange vested street cleaner before, though. He held up a hand and then rushed out in the road in front of me with one of those grab sticks to pick up a bit of litter from the road and looked immensely pleased with himself ...
