    Day 6 back on the road

    Salina to Mount Vernon, Illinois was a particularly un-newsworthy day. I looked like we’ve used a little bit of oil – that’s not very exciting and I’m not sure what to think of it.     ... to search for the grave of Thomas Lincoln, Abe’s
    father. My old jalopy had been acting up again with the air conditioning not
    working for a few days and an occasional squeaking sound from a belt (nothing
    particularly unusual). Starting the car at the cemetery there was a sharp
    screeching sound, smoke coming out from under the hood, and then a loud pop as
    the steering belt snapped.
