... from a bucket and hose), a toilet (a bucket under a wooden seat), a cooker and kitchenette, complete with small pots of herbs. Upstairs (!) was a little loft, for sleeping. He was, in essence, the first camper-vanner. We spoke with some locals who curate the place and who told us stories of his life, before jumping back into our rather more modern (but much less characterful) hire car to push on down the road.

Turns out St. Louis was going to be about 125 miles and when I got to 80 I was feeling pretty beat. Today's ride was different than any other days. It started out with 30 miles of flat riding and turned into 15 miles of steep ups and downs. The hills were difficult but I got through them and it flattened out for the rest of the day.
