NM 285 out of Santa Fe runs across a high plateau where you seem to lose the last of the Rockies as the Sangre de Cristos dwindle down to nubs. High on my bucket was (and I say was) Taos. Poor Tom drove about nine hours, some of them in a raging rain storm. Taos was a bust. We immediately headed for Santa Fe.
The ride, however to Taos was nothing short of spectacular. The landscapes were like paintings. We traveled through sage brush fields and majestic mountains. We miss so much of this beautiful country when we travel by plane.
