Left New Orleans heading to Pensacola. First stop was at Bellengrath Gardens in Theodore. The gardens were beautiful and the house was very impressive. I still didn't see an alligator but did see a large Gar in the bayou. We had lunch in the cafe and most people went and put their bathers on for the beach. I will give 2 hours at the beach a miss. Travelling into Mobile, it was just how you imagine. Fairly wet, swampy land. ...

The state of Florida (our 10th state so far) has this funny bit that sticks out to the northwest along the top of the Gulf of Mexico - called the panhandle, it prevents Georgia having a southern coastline - and restricts Alabama to just a little bit. It also has two time zones, just to be confusing, and provides a home, in Pensacola for the National Naval Aviation Museum. So of course ...

... Shore Beach and headed down to Orange Beach. As we settled down on the white sands a huge storm suddenly appeared on the horizon and within minutes we were engulfed in torrential rain which was as warm as a bath. The kids couldn't care less and continued to swim in the sea while Lee and I huddled in the car. Within ten minutes it had passed. Crazy weather! It has been great visiting Alabama which is very much a less well trodden tourist state but nonetheless lovely. Next stop ...

... Beach, which is actually on an island across the bay from Pensacola and found a nice little beach for a picnic. We enjoyed our sandwiches, sand and all and watched the surfers. We had a beautiful sunset to complete our day and our time in Pensacola.

Our next stop will be Crystal River, on the gulf side of Florida where the manatees spend the winter. This has been on my bucket list. Maybe it will even be warm down there. Cheers!
