Our immediate reaction told him we were appalled and he put the pictures straight back in his bag. I bought one of his newspapers just to get him to go away but writing this now, I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't tell him to stick his paper where it hurts. As we came over the hill down onto the plains, the sun was shining in the distance on the beautiful hills and changing landscape. ... 1906 this area was designated as a National Park so it will be preserved for future generations. The petrified wood was, prior to this, being collected as souvenirs and also taken out and used in many commercial ventures. It's now illegal to remove it from within the park but there are deposits outside of the park so its quite easy to by samples or jewelry or furniture made from it. The story of Fred Harvey is an interesting one and quite significant to this area as there ...
