... so that's not where I got this outlaw-hero view of Billy).

Anyway, Fort Sumner is on the way to Santa Rosa (where I am tonight) and Fort Sumner boasts both a Billy the Kid Museum and the actual grave. So I had to stop.

I browsed the museum, which frankly, is, uhm, strange - if I were to guess it was started by a hoarder, who had bazzillions of old objects, and one of them was Billy the Kid's actual Winchester rifle. And so the museum was born ...

... ready for Memorial weekend and turned out to be our entertainment. We saw a bird we have never seen before. It was a small bird with two long quills as a tail and on the end of that was a little feather. No, we did not have too much wine. Could not get a picture, Kathy. The wind was sooo strong~ from 20 to 30 mph and it lasted the whole time we were there. We left Coleman and traveled to a small town called Littlefield. ...

... the town became a major retail center and boomed. Now, there are over 900 historic buildings to see on a walking or driving tour. It is not a pretty town but it does have a Museum about the town and the Rough Riders.

Headed down route 84 without any cars behind us for about forty miles to I 40 east. What a nice peaceful road to drive going through two small towns all affected by the drought.

        Got off ...

... having picnics. It looked like the apocalypse, but it just turned out to be a detour. I-40 just east of our campground was shut down since just before midnight last night due to a fatal crash. A semi rear-ended a car killing the driver of the car on impact, launching the semi into the median before colliding with another semi which caught fire. Several hospitalized and interstate shutdown going on 8 hours now. Taking a 200 mile detour through Clovis...just gonna roll with ...

Fort Sumner is the site where Sheriff Pat Garrett shot Billy the Kid. there are two museums one in town that is pretty extensive. The museum at the grave site is small and not worth the admission. We trekked to the site of the Maxwell house where the shooting happened and while I like to see famous historic sites all that was there was a stone marker. the house is long gone and the trail is not marked and we had to ask the gentlemen at the museum how to get there. ...
