    ... rec centre in town. There were RV spots for people coming into town for horse shows and stuff like that, so it was an ideal stopping place but noisy from truck traffic most of the night.
    There seems to be major seismic exploration activity going on along Hwy 60. It was extremely busy with truck traffic and all the hotels and motels had parking lots full of pickup trucks. ...

    ... to prevent hail damage (a common occurrence). When we were having lunch in Abilene this siren started wailing - absolutely ear-splitting. No one seemed to be panicking. We did know that they had a siren system to alert people to tornados. It was 12 noon so we assumed (and rightly so) that they were testing the system. When we were in Dodge, the Museum brochure alerted us that they would be testing the siren at noon Wednesday ...

They had a 15 minute movie about the beginnings of Dodge City, and a complete full sized replica of the downtown city buildings set up as a museum.
