We set off very early this morning so that we would have plenty of time at the train station to queue for our ticket. However getting out of campus itself proved challenging as the gates were still flooded as last night and it was continuing to pour. I took my shoes off and walked mid-shin deep in my socks through and once inside the metro station I changed into my open shoes rather than new socks and trail shoes. We arrived in Suzhou under half hour and were immediately enveloped in a smog of dust and smell of chemicals. Coming out of the train station I felt the air was filled with heavy smoke. Vicky, our guide, said that for all its ancient beauty, the town is also an industrial center with several manufacturing factories emitting toxic waste in the environment.

For convenience, we had our typical lazy susan lunch at the Spinning Mill. It was disgusting! It was all bones -- chicken bones, fish bones, pork bones. No one ate anything! And, Sue keeps asking why do they call it a Lazy Susan?!!
