    ... I've said this already, but the headwaters are stunningly beautiful. Lake Itasca empties over some rocks into the creek that forms the Mississippi.     I did have more second thoughts but I only had to drive through the blizzard for another 60 miles. Needless to say, it was heavy snow and I went pretty slow, but I had a truck to follow and made it just fine. Once I crossed into Minnesota the roads were hit or miss.     ... North Dakota which is very flat, very flat then turned east on Highway 10 towards the Lake Country Scenic Byway. Past Detroit Lakes we began to head north and west and north and west, climbing in elevation from 920 ft in Fargo to over 1500 in the high lake country.     ... re-route to seek the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi River. We headed west but also north and landed just outside Walker, Minnesota for the night in a lovely campground. Minnesota is the state of 10,000 lakes according to most license plates - though I did see some newer looking ones proclaiming "critical habitat." And lakes there are; Walker is situated on a bay of Leech Lake. We will continue on tomorrow to seek the headwaters of the Mississippi.
