... were so tired so we finally fell asleep. We woke up again at 7.30 and walked to pick up our car. We loaded our 4 backpacks into the car and we were off to Franz Josef for 2 days to see the glaciers. Shortly we were out of Christchurch and even the heavy rain the scenery was spectacular and I had feeling that I am in heaven. Well rainy heaven. I could not stop smiling and trying to imagine how it can look when sunny. Lot of turns, beautiful mountains, some with a bit of snow, some ...

... We have lunch at Amberly Beach and spend the night at Leithfield Beach, both on the Atlantic coast north of Christchurch.

On Monday morning (21st) we decide to go to Taylor's Mistake and walk up to the old military base on the East side of Christchurch. We have a VERY interesting time navigating to the car park for this walk. It was full of switchbacks and very narrow; so glad the camper-van was not any bigger or we might ...

We had to get out and walk quite a bit of the way in the freezing cold. And then when we finally got there, the restaurant was closed on Mondays! After that small nightmare, we were ready to head to a much warmer Sydney.

We had done it; driven 3986km from the top to the bottom of NZ. We think we saw all 60 million sheep but maybe not all 4 million ...

... three years after the destructive earthquake and with a sat nav we found the accommodation easily enough - and began to see how the city is recovering. We dumped our stuff at the rather swish Southwark Apartments and headed into the city centre. To our right we could still see some Victorian brick houses severely damaged but ahead were some ultra modern buildings obviously recently put up. Some of ...

Drove to our final east coast city today. Christchurch, the first settlement in NZ, was hit by earthquakes in 2010 & 2011 causing extensive damage and killing 185 people. Many buildings can still be seen with heavy damage. One area several blocks square is a restricted area Red Zone. The city is coming back and in innovative ways. One shopping area is composed of ...
