... we stayed at in Christchurch was the Jailhotel. Interestingly enough, this was not the first time I have stayed in a hotel that is housed in what was a former prison. I had also stayed in a jail hotel while I was in Switzerland. However this jail appears to have been a recent convert because they had some rooms which contained prisoner’s drawings on the wall which were dated as late as 1999. Tomorrow we meet up with Hughie's nephew who is going to show us Christchurch. That will be an eye opener I ...

Amazing wildlife viewing here. As soon as we arrive we get a boat out to swim with Dusky dolphins. The dolphins seem nervous and we find out why after our fourth swim - there are killer whales in the water. Next morning we take a flight out to spot whales. Our pilot Murray is excellent. He times the whale's dive so he ...

... to ever occur in recorded history. 185 people lost their lives and many more were wounded. Only about 10% of the original buildings still stand in Christchurch, the rest all collapsed as the ground shook. It was quite emotional actually being taken around the city and seeing the damage and the way the city is still clinging to its old buildings. In some cases there were supports holding up just one remaining wall of collapsed buildings, just ...
